In December of 1862, the vessel, while sailing up the Yazoo River north of Vicksburg, Mississippi, triggered a pair of Confederate mines. It sank within minutes, becoming the first armored war vessel ever sunk by an electronically activated mine. The author and two historian friend located the ship nearly 100 years later, still intact, guns loaded and much of the original gear still in place it was later salvaged and restored. Included are many photos of the artifacts recovered from the wreck site. |
